A Rancho Santa Margarita woman who died Monday night after being struck by a United States Postal Service truck has been identified by the Orange County Coroner.

Mary Honda died after hitting her head on the pavement at 12 Teaberry Lane in Rancho Santa Margarita. She was 85.

Honda was conscious and alert when Orange County Sheriff and Fire Authority personnel arrived on the scene, according to Lt. Brian Schmutz, chief of police services for Rancho Santa Margarita.

Within 25 minutes of the injury in the neighborhood behind near Tijeras Creek Elementary Schook, she was transported to Mission Hospital by ambulance.

However, she died about two hours after the incident, 8:29 p.m.

The driver of the mail truck called 9-1-1 at 6:34 p.m. to report the incident.

Honda was the first traffic-related fatality in the city since 2007, according to Schmutz.
