No-Burn Order Goes into Effect at Midnight Tonight

It's the 13th such order -- impacting most of Los Angeles County and all of Orange County -- the South Coast AQMD has issued this season.

For the 13th time this season, fireplace use has been prohibited in the Los Angeles Air Basin because of anticipated bad smog.

The ban takes effect at midnight tonight, and will last 24 hours, said Sam Atwood at the South Coast AQMD. Tiny particles are expected to exceed health standards, he said.

The ban applies to most residences in all of Orange County, all of Los Angeles County except the Antelope Valley, and western Riverside and San
Bernardino counties.

Exempted from the order are fireplaces that sit more than 3,000 feet above sea level, low income homes, residences without natural gas service and homes that have no heating source other than fire.

The National Weather Service called for typically mild nights, with lows expected to be around 48 in most of the area.

If you burn wood, sign up for the alerts through the AQMD website. They will send notifications directly to you. This burn was in effect last night but the 6:00 am Patch email was too late.

This article was posted as soon as we got the alert, which was after our 6 a.m. (Monday deadline) for the newsletter. As I mentioned on another article where you posted (but for the benefit of others) the emailed newsletters are a little like getting a newspaper. There has to be a deadline. Ours is 6 a.m. So at 6 a.m., the newsletter sends out everything posted in the last 24 hours. To get more timely delivery of news: 1) check your favorite Patch home page (you can set it up as your personal home page) 2) subscribe to a section -- for example, police and fire -- and you'll be notified when new stories in that category are posted 3) subscribe to the Facebook page and/or Twitter accounts of your hometown Patch. :-)

Burn bans need to be all the time. I cannot take the smoke coming from my neighbor's chimney and it sucks that I have to close my windows and be without fresh air just so one can burn logs in their fire place - even in the summer!!! I might suggest an alternative, like natural gas fire place or a fake fire place. I praise the burn bans!!!

Good God. We are not the descendants of our Forefathers, if we are willing to tolerate "the state" imposing their ideology on our person through bureaucratic jack-boots. I think I will wait up til midnight and light a few logs, just out of spite.

The AQMB completely ignores the massive pollution from nano-particulates of aluminum, barium and strontium due to non-stop Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering (a Federal government program to reduce global warming) because the particles are too small to measure. These particulates fill our once-blue skies turning them a now silvery white.

How do we report violators?
Stuart Ebert February 18, 2014 at 07:45 PM
Wow - I agree with Maureen on all points. We ARE part of a weather engineering experiment - with no consent. Let's hope that a whistleblower comes forward soon. Hang in there.

This is more tyrannical govt interference executed by those forcing their phony beliefs that no burn days makes a difference in air quality. If the Patch wanted to do us a service they would expose these regulators and force them to provide proof that that this level of liberty intrusion makes any difference. They expect us to lay down and agree to anythin they deem legit. #teaparty

I made the biggest fire possible inside and outside. I love making nice toasty fires. The smell of smoke on my clothes and smores for the kids. Burn baby burn. Down with all these stupid rules. Keep warm.

these idiots at the AQMD need something to justify their existence, so they make up a crisis where there is none

If you have other means of heating your home (and BTW forecasts are in the 70's and80's) and you are still burning wood, you are either a neandrothol or an idiot. 90% of that heat goes straight up the chimney and the carbon formerly stored in that wood is released into the atmosphere. News flash to the wood burning fireplace owners; Your house stinks and your clothes smell. Your children are being taunted for smelling 'funny' and all of the soot in their lungs will probably have an effect on their health somewhere down the road. But keep burning and infringing on your neighbors well being. Isn't it your constitutional right?

Stoked, learn to spell and get some manners
Stoked February 20, 2014 at 12:55 PM
Sorry GG. By reading Patch comments I never would have guessed that manners were a prerequisite and with auto-correct I never imagined that I would have to learn spalling. Your California public schools at work......
Stoked February 20, 2014 at 12:59 PM
And GG, I believe that you were the first one that coined 'idiots' in this thread. Where are your manners?
Ben Dover February 20, 2014 at 01:21 PM
Stoked - are your kids taunted at school for smelling like unicorns and fairy dust ?
maureen February 20, 2014 at 02:35 PM
It appears that both "Stoked" and "Bend Over" are shills and are here to misdirect the conversation into name-calling. California's AQMD may be getting their directions from the corrupt and over-reaching EPA. Check out this: EPA's Wood-Burning Stove Ban Deals Blow to Rural Homes http://youtu.be/IWRv8jeu5MY
Stoked February 20, 2014 at 04:07 PM
Yes Maureen, you caught me. I am here along with my partner Mr Dover in hopes that we can dupe the public into thinking that there is no government corruption. I actually have information that the AQMD is getting their directions from Al Gore. Or was that Alf from Melmac? (let this be the first Alf reference of 2014) My hat is off to Mr Dover for being able to pinpoint the aroma of unicorns and fairy dust... After all these years I thought that it was peanut butter.
