A Special Day for Special Olympics at SMCHS

Santa Margarita Catholic hosts Orange County's largest Special Olympics track and field meet.

Sophomores from Santa Margarita Catholic were the hosts Friday for the Special Olympics, putting on the largest track and field meet of its kind in Orange County.

It's the fifth year that the sophomores, as part of their Christian service program, paired off with athletes in the fun, inspirational event that included about 270 special needs athletes from 14 schools across the county.

There were about 250 Santa Margarita students and staff who participated, but student involvement wasn't limited to sophomores as juniors and seniors got involved as well.

Students participated in events such as the long long jump, 100-meter run and a softball throw.

The event included a parade of schools, the national anthem and a torch ceremony.
