Alexandra Kubiak Named National Merit Scholar

The Santa Margarita Catholic senior picks up the prestigious scholarship for her academics and community service.

Alexandra Kubiak, a senior at Santa Margarita Catholic High, has been named a National Merit Scholar.

Kubiak was chosen from more than 15,000 finalists in the 2011 National Merit Program to be a recipient of the $2,500 scholarship.

Such scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. These scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

A committee of educators reviews academic records, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and the recommendation written by a high school official when selecting scholarship recipients.

A resident of Laguna Niguel, Kubiak plays soccer, participates in the school’s theatre program, is a member of ASB, teaches soccer to children with mental and physical disabilities, and is treasurer for the campus club, Coat a Kid, which provides coats to children in need. Kubiak will graduate with an internationally-recognized high school diploma through the school’s International Baccalaureate Programme; a rigorous academic program that encourages students to become active and compassionate lifelong learners.
