Architect: Las Flores Schools Need $14 Mil in Upgrades

With Capistrano Unified facing $822 million in construction and repair needs, here's what it would take to modernize Las Flores Elementary and Middle schools.

The combination campus of Las Flores Middle School and Las Flores Elementary School could use nearly $14 million in upgrades, according to a Capistrano Unified School District architect.

Of that figure, $4 million would go to replace half the portable classrooms with permanent structures. Another $2 million-plus would be spent on postponed repairs and maintenance, such as paint, paving, fencing and the intercom system.

The report was created in 2009 and has recently been updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

For Las Flores, the updated total also includes $1.1 million to buy upgraded technology for students.
