Day in the Park Celebrates 'Week of the Young Child'

It's a preschool preview for the community as kids get a chance to play and parents can check out options for their tots.

A handful of local preschools gathered at Central Park in Rancho Santa Margarita on Saturday as a means of reaching out to the community in celebration of "The Week of the Young Child."

It provided an opportunity for the schools to talk to parents and while giving kids some hands-on activities.

About 250 people cycled through the tented area, about half of those kids who were mesmerized by Flubber, Aqua Balls and beads to make their own jewelry.

"We wanted to give the community an opportunity to see what preschools are available to them without obligation," said Carrie Gulino, principal at .

About a dozen schools were invited to participate, and based on the success of the event Saturday there will be more than the five that showed up: , , Kids Kingdom of , and .

The Week of the Young Child runs April 22-28. It is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, with the intent to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. Its theme is "early years are learning years."
