Key to Awesomeness: Dhilip Raman has always been a great speller, but he took things to a new level when he competed in the finals round of the two weeks ago. The bee took place at the Orange County Department of Education and included 55 local finalists. Dhilip placed fourth and walked away with a $200 prize; he went out on the word “dermatactile.”

Originally from Malaysia, Dhilip attended school in San Jose until the third grade, when his family relocated to southern California. Now a seventh-grade student at Las Flores Middle School, he enjoys the subjects of English and social studies. Described by his mother as “very independent and a hard worker,” Dhilip also excels at math and was the district champion for Math Olympiad when he was a fifth-grader.

During his free time, Dhilip enjoys reading, playing the violin and mastering the game of chess. He serves as a Scribe with Boy Scout Troop 772 and has a black belt in Tae Kwan Do.

For his outstanding accomplishment in the Orange County Spelling Bee, Dhilip Ramin is this week's outstanding Whiz Kid.
