Basketball: McCluskey Resigns From Trabuco Hills

As a matter of principle, veteran coach Tom McCluskey resigns over a booster e-mail 'that looks like an invoice.' Mustangs beat Esperanza in OT on Friday.

Tom McCluskey, who has been the boys' basketball coach at Trabuco Hills for nine seasons, resigned this week over a matter of principle.

McCluskey told the Orange County Register he was asked to serve a one-week suspension for a booster e-mail sent to parents. The e-mail appeared to look like an invoice.

At a game on Friday, Principal Craig Collins told the Register that "it was never a suspension" but the coach was asked "to step back for a week."

McCluskey resigned on Tuesday, and a Wednesday game was postponed. On Friday, the Mustangs defeated Esperanza in overtime, 60-55, behind Craig Magyar's 31 points.

Guiding Trabuco Hills (4-2) from the bench was junior varsity coach Robert Lee, who symbolically left a seat empty where McCluskey would normally sit.
