Boys' Basketball Regionals: Mission Wins, Capo Can't Finish Off Poly

Mission Viejo will play Mater Dei next. Capistrano Valley nearly scored the upset of the tournament.

Capistrano Valley very nearly turned in one of the epic results in the school's basketball history on Wednesday, but instead fell to Long Beach Poly in the first round of the Southern California Division I Regional Championships.

The Cougars were beaten by the second-ranked team in the state, 65-59, in overtime in the first round of the tournament that will send a representative to the State Championship game.

Capo led going into the fourth quarter, 44-40, but was not able to hold off a Poly rally that sent the game into overtime tied at 55-55.

Once there, it was all Poly. The second-seeded Jackrabbits (28-2) scored the first six points and advanced to the second round against Orange Lutheran. Roschon Prince led Poly with 28 points, including six in the four-minute overtime.

It was a disappointing end for Capo, which had 17 seniors on its team. They could have had one of the program's signature victories if not for Poly's superiority on the boards—which anchored the comeback.

Stephen Short scored 19 for Capo Valley, followed by Nick Thomas with 18 and Aleks Lipovic with 15.

Capo Valley, which shared the South Coast League title with Mission Viejo, finishes the season 25-6.

Mission Viejo 70, San Diego Torrey Pines 62: After losing to Orange Lutheran in the Southern Section Division 1A championship, Mission Viejo (28-4) bounced back in a big way with a road victory over the San Diego Section Divison I champion.

The Diablos got double-figure scoring from four players to advance to the second round of the tournament against top-seeded Mater Dei (30-2). That game, at Mater Dei, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., following a girls' game that begins at 7 pitting Huntington Beach against Mater Dei.

Mission Viejo outscored the Falcons, 22-11 in the first quarter, and 19-8 in the third quarter to take a 57-40 lead into the fourth.

Michael Cramer scored a team-high 18 points for Mission Viejo. Max Redfield and Evan Zeller scored 14 apiece, and Sage Stone scored 10.
