Boys' Basketball: Roundup of Weekend Playoff Games

Mission Viejo and Capistrano Valley, seeded 1-2 in Division 1A, both win first-round games; Corona del Mar and Santa Margarita will face each other in the 3AA quarterfinals.

For most local teams, Friday was the first round of the Southern Section boys' basketball playoffs, though there were a few teams that had second round games. Here's a look at what happened Friday night around the Southland. The next round will be played on Tuesday.

Division 1AA

First round

No. 12 Upland 59, Fountain Valley 56: The Barons (17-9) stormed back from a 16-point deficit with four minutes remaining, but gave up six free throws in the final minute, including two with seven seconds remaining.

No. 4 Loyola 66, Trabuco Hills 52: Craig Magyar scored 19 and Chad Shelley 17 but it wasn't enough for the Mustangs (15-12), who didn't have the depth to hang with Loyola through the second and third quarters. Trabuco trailed 16-13 after one and oustcored the Cubs 17-11 in the fourth quarter.

No. 3 Etiwanda 68, San Clemente 39: Brian Bang scored 11 and Brock Eissman 10, but the Tritons (13-14) didn't crack 10 points in a quarter until the fourth, and by then it was too late: they trailed 51-24.

Palmdale Knight 50, No. 15 Los Alamitos 48: The Sunset League champion Griffins were one of five teams to lose home games in the first round.

Division 1A

First round

No. 1 Mission Viejo 73, Riverside La Sierra 50: Evan Zeller scored 17 and Max Redfield 13 as the Diablos (24-3) coasted into a second-round game against Glendale.

No. 5 El Toro 58, Long Beach Cabrillo 50: The Chargers (20-8) trailed by six points at halftime but rallied to beat Cabrillo (10-15) as Jordan Faison scored 20 and Ryan Roberts 12. El Toro will next play at Huntington Beach.

No. 3 Orange Lutheran 70, Dana Hills 46: The Dolphins, outscored 18-4 in the second quarter, didn't have enough to match Gabe York's 24 points, including an awesome dunk (youtube search "Gabe York dunk") that has already been seen by 77,300. Hayden Fredrick led the Dolphins (11-15) with 13 points.

No. 6 Aliso Niguel 89, El Rancho 55: The Wolverines held a 21-5 scoring advantage in the second quarter and continued to roll into a second-round game at Corona. Scott Lynds led the way with 20 points and Bryan Fisher had 16.

No. 2 Capistrano Valley 74, Marina 59: Aleks Lipovic and Nick Thomas scored 15 points apiece for the Cougars (23-4), who will play host to Walnut in the second round. Thomas, the point guard, played for the first time since Jan. 20 after recovering from a knee injury.

Division 2AA

First round

Tesoro 48, Westminster 38: Jalen Bruce and Andrew Lee scored 11 apiece. After scoring the game's first 12 points, Tesoro held on to beat the Lions, who scored 20 in the fourth quarter after scoring only 18 through three. Tesoro next plays second-seeded Canyon Country Canyon.

Division 3A

Second round

No. 5 Corona del Mar 61, No 12 San Luis Obispo 49: The Sea Kings led 43-41 heading into the fourth quarter before pulling away. Jake McCloskey and Joey Calise scored 16 apiece, and Blake Grable and Andrew McCormack each added 11. CdM will play at Santa Margarita in the quarterfinals.

No. 4 Santa Margarita 88, No. 13 South Pasadena 52: The Eagles (16-13) were never challenged as they got 15 points apiece from Joe Furstinger and Ryan Merritt; Tyler Strauss had 12 and Wolfie  Wood 11. Santa Margarita will play host to Corona del Mar on Tuesday in what may be retiring coach Jerry DeBusk's final home game.

Division 4AA

Second round

No. 8 North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 53, No. 10 JSerra 49: Three players accounted for 49 of Harvard-Westlake's points as they turned away the upset bid by JSerra (16-11). H-W (19-9) will play host to top-seeded Gardena Serra in the quarterfinals.

Division 5AA

Second round

No. 9 Aquinas 59, No. 8 Saddleback Valley Christian 54: The Warriors (20-8) didn't have enough to pull out the victory in the fourth quarter as Aquinas got 21 points from Demetrius Overstreet.

Division 5A

Second round

No. 2 Rolling Hills Prep 77, No. 15 Capistrano Valley Christian 45: The Eagles (21-7) were turned away by one of the tournament favorites.
