Boys Basketball: Santa Margarita 63, Pioneer 59

Joe Furstinger ignites a fourth quarter comeback the day after a double-overtime loss.

Less than 15 hours after losing a double-overtime game to St. John Bosco, Santa Margarita Catholic took the floor against Whittier Pioneer and staged a fourth-quarter rally to pull out a victory.

The Eagles outscored Pioneer over the final eight minutes, 23-14, and scored a 63-59 nonleague victory Saturday at Santa Margarita.

Joe Furstinger, who scored 19, ignited the comeback with a pair of steals and dunks to open the fourth quarter.

Sjur Berg added 15 points as the Eagles (14-6) took advantage of the inside game to overpower Pioneer (12-8).

Santa Margarita's Devonte Klines scored 11 in the game, which featured a rare 12:30 p.m. tipoff.

Coming on the heels of the heartbreaking loss to St. John Bosco on Friday, it wasn't surprising Santa Margarita fell behind in the first quarter, 19-14. The Eagles trailed going into the fourth quarter by five points.

The Eagles will next play host to Mater Dei on Wednesday to begin the second round of Trinity League play.
