Boys Basketball: St. John Bosco 74, Santa Margarita 71 (2 OT)

Trinity League: Ray Shou connects on six three-point baskets, but the Eagles could have used a couple more in loss to Bosco.

The Trinity League is turning out to be every bit as competitive in boys' basketball as it was in football just a few months ago.

On Friday night at Santa Margarita Catholic, the home team Eagles were beaten in double overtime, 74-71, by St. John Bosco on the strength of a couple of key three-point baskets.

The game concluded the first of two rounds of Trinigy League action for Bosco (13-7 overall, 3-2 in league) and SMCHS (13-6, 2-3), which is ranked No. 8 in the Orange County Top 10.

Vance Jackson hit a three-pointer that tied the game in the closing seconds of the first overtime, and another trey in the second four-minute overtime period was the difference in the game, giving the Braves a 68-66 lead at the time.

Jackson totaled five three-pointers and 22 points overall, a fine complement to Tyler Dorsey's 25 points.

Santa Margarita, playing for the first time since Saturday, got outstanding efforts as well. Joe Furstinger scored 21, Devonte Klines 19 and Ray Shou 18.

Shou made six of 11 from the three-point arc, and Klines five of 10. Klines also had five assists.

Furstinger had three assists, five blocks and 17 rebounds.

Santa Margarita led after the first quarter, 23-18, but trailed by two heading into the fourth, 46-44. The Eagles were outscored in the second overtime, 11-8.

The Eagles play host to Pioneer High from Whittier today before hosting top-ranked Mater Dei on Wednesday.
