Football: CdM Shut Out, but Edison, Poly Selected for Bowl Tournament

Corona del Mar is passed over as teams try to advance to the State Bowl Championship games in two weeks at Home Depot Center. Edison and Long Beach Poly get nod to continue.

Long Beach Poly and Edison have been selected to compete in the State Bowl Championship tournament.

Poly, which defeated Mater Dei on Saturday, 35-17, to win the Southern Section Pac-5 title, will play for a berth in the Division I Bowl; the Jackrabbits (11-3), who had three losses, lost out on an Open Bowl opportunity to Harbor City Narbonne (14-0) and Corona Centennial (13-1).

Narbonne defeated Poly early in the season, 56-0.

Narbonne and Centennial play Satuday at Cerritos College.

Poly will play Clovis North on Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Long Beach City College.

Edison (13-1), which defeated Villa Park, 28-10, on Friday in the Southwest Division championship—Coach Dave White his first title in 27 seasons as head coach—will play host to Gardena Serra (12-2) in the State Division II regional game at Orange Coast College on Friday, 7:30 p.m.

The winner will play on Dec. 15, 4 p.m., at Home Depot Center against the winner Clayton Valley and Oakdale, who will represent the North.

Corona del Mar (12-2 after a forfeit but 11-3 on the field) was eligible to be in the Division III game but was passed over in favor of Monrovia (12-2) and San Diego Madison (12-1); Monrovia will host that game Friday, 7:30.

Corona del Mar won its division in dominating fashion, posting three shutouts before allowing its only touchdown—in the fourth quarter with a 35-3 lead—in its 35-10 victory over Garden Grove.
