Football: Mission Viejo 35, Trabuco Hills 0

South Coast League: The Diablos clinch their fifth consecutive league championship.

A week after dismissing Tesoro, 37-7, in what figured to the deciding game for the South Coast League championship, Mission Viejo stamped its ticket into the Southern Section Pac-5 playoffs Friday as the league's No. 1 team.

This is the Diablos' 12th league title in 14 years, their fifth in a row. The success coincides with the arrival of Bob Johnson as coach in 1999.

Even if Mission, ranked No. 1 in Orange County and No. 2 in the section, loses next week at El Toro, it holds the tie-breaker over Tesoro.

Going into the game, Trabuco still had a chance to win the league title, but the Mustangs—despite their first 4-0 start since 1992—have no chance of making the playoffs.

Key Stats: Ian Fieber passed for 310 yards and four touchdowns. He had three passes intercepted.

Pivotal Moment: Once Trabuco Hills was down by 14 points on Fieber’s 16-yard pass to Modster, the Mustangs had to have known they were in a hole. But three minutes later, with 6:20 left in the half, Fieber connected on a 28-yard score to Connor Hill for a 21-0 lead. Modster’s a playmaker, but when the guy who’s not a playmaker is scoring, you’re in deep trouble. And Trabuco was.
