Football: Pac-5 Roundup for Week 6

All the favored teams in South Orange County won, some more convincingly than others.

Mission Viejo had the weekend off, which gave Coach Bob Johnson plenty of viewing opportunities as he gets his undefeated Diablos—ranked No. 6 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, and No. 2 in Orange County—ready for its South Coast League opener next week at San Clemente.

Here's a look at the South Coast and Trinity League results from this weekend as teams head toward the Southern Section Pac-5 playoffs.

Tesoro (7-0, 1-0), ranked No. 3 in Orange County, survived a scare from the team that most expect to finish last in among the five teams in league. Trabuco Hills (4-3, 0-1) tied the score at 21-21 early in the fourth quarter when J.T. Land blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown, but a steady dose of Nate Tago gave Tesoro the lead with less than three minutes remaining. Tago scored the second of his two touchdowns, and a Trabuco turnover led to another touchdown and a 35-21 lead. The turnover was a killer because Trabuco scored with 26 seconds left on the second of Cole Breeland's touchdown receptions.

The return to the South Coast League by No. 6 El Toro (7-0, 1-0) was a successful one, and even though Connor Manning had modest numbers by his 2012 standard—28 of 40, 367 yards, three TDs, two interceptions—it was the running of Jacob Furnari that put the Chargers over the top. Furnari rushed 36 times for 195 yards and four touchdowns. San Clemente got interception returns for touchdowns from Kelsey Benoit and sophomore Sam Darnold. After missing the last two games—both losses—quarterback Sean Donnelly completed 14 of 23 passes for 235 yards, two TDs and an interception.

TRINITY LEAGUE

The Eagles defense recorded their third shutout of the season, but all eyes were on the quarterback spot. With Nebraska recruit Johnny Stanton on the sidelines after surgery last week on his torn ACL, junior Josh Canty (5-8-2, 29 yards) played the first half and sophomore Kyle Sweet (6-7-0, 36) the second for No. 1 Santa Margarita (6-0, 1-0). Neither was Stanton-like, but no one is expecting them to be that good. Sweet rushed 11 times for 52 yards, including a touchdown, and though Ryan Wolpin—sick with the flu this week—carried 14 times for a season-low 64 yards, he made some key runs and scored twice. Ninth-ranked Servite (2-4, 0-1), which has won or shared the last seven league titles, was shut out for the third time in four games. The Friars play Orange Lutheran next week.

St. John Bosco 21, Orange Lutheran 6

Bosco (2-4, 1-0) has four losses because of forfeits for using an ineligible player. With eligible players, the Braves defeated No. 7 Lutheran (5-1, 0-1), which was making its Trinity debut under new coach Chuck Petersen. OLu had been averaging 37 points per game, but was largely untested. Its only score was a 3-yard drive, the result of a fumble on a punt attempt, that gave it a 6-0 lead. It was a big night for Bosco receiver A.J. Holman, who is a transfer from OLu; Holman had six receptions including a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Sophomore quarterback Josh Rosen passed for 140 yards and ran for 70, and Darren Walker ran for two touchdowns for Bosco, which is ranked No. 12 in the state.

Mater Dei 42, JSerra 10

No. 4 Mater Dei (5-1, 1-0) got a big night from Thomas Duarte as it headed for a showdown next week with No. 1 Santa Margarita. Duarte had two touchdown receptions, of 50 and 18 yards, and also returned an interception 52 yards for a score. Special teams added a TD on a blocked a punt for a score. Mater Dei scored 21 in the first quarter. Although the game wasn't expected to be particularly close, JSerra (5-1, 0-1) had some scoring opportunities that would have made it competitive had the Lions been able to finish. Casey Eugenio, who had returned interceptions for touchdowns the past two weeks, returned one 77 yards but was stopped at the 1-yard line. Dante Pettis scored on an 81-yard reception from Nick Robinson to cut the deficit to 21-7 midway in the third quarter. JSerra plays at Bosco next week.
