Football: Santa Margarita 35, Long Beach Jordan 6

Eagles get a breather a week after beating Arizona's top team. It's an easy win, but not particularly impressive.

It may not have been the electric atmosphere from a week ago in which Orange County's top-ranked team scored a victory over the No. 1 team from Arizona, but two weeks into the season and Santa Margarita Catholic is still packing an unbeaten record.

The Eagles won on the road for the second time this season by scoring a 35-6 nonleague victory at Long Beach Jordan on Friday.

Although the effort was hardly perfect—the Eagles again showed they have plenty of room for improvement despite the lofty expectations thrust on them—the defense was solid.

It sacked Jordan quarterbacks six times; Tayler Prenovost had two and Nick Begg 1 1/2; Begg also recovered a fumble. Gian Carlo Spinosi and R.J. Mazolewski had interceptions.

On offense, Johnny Stanton completed 10 of 20 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed eight times for 79 yards–including a 74-yard score. Uncharacteristically, Stanton was sacked three times by his Moore League opponent and he threw another interception, his third of the season and a third of the total interceptions (nine) he had in 15 games last season.

Ryan Wolpin carried nine times for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Alec McNiff and Kyle Sweet caught Stanton's touchdown passes.

In one of those useless statistical categories—or maybe it's just a statistical anomaly—Jordan ran 69 plays to the Eagles 41, and had a time of possession advantage of 34 minutes 20 seconds to the Eagles' 13:40.
