Any time your running back scores five touchdowns, you’re in good shape, and that was the case for Tesoro who got a terrific effort from Jon Rivera as the Titans bulled their way to a first-round victory at home in the Southern Section Pac-5 playoffs.

Tesoro will play next week at top-seeded Bellflower St. John Bosco.

Key Stats: Jon Rivera rushed 30 times for 257 yards and touchdowns of 6, 1, 1, 7 and 8 yards for Tesoro.

Quotable: “(Rivera) can be an absolute workhorse,” Tesoro coach Matt Poston told the OC Varsity. “He carried the load tonight. The line was making huge gashes for him to get through.”

Notes: Devon Modster passed for 189 yards and two touchdowns. … Modster’s 37-yard TD pass to Jake Smeltzer gave Tesoro a 14-6 lead, and his 8-yard TD pass to Jeff Webster made it 35-18 with 4:20 left in the third quarter. … Although Cabrillo started well—it scored first—and trailed 14-12 late in the first quarter, the Tesoro defense shut it down in the middle going. Cabrill trailed 49-18 before scoring twice in the last three minutes. … Kaelon Price led Cabrillo with 289 yards passing and 67 rushing.
