Football: Tesoro 55, Compton 14

The Titans breeze in their opener behind Matt Adam, Nate Tago and a stellar defense.

With 17 starters returning from a team that reached the Southern Section Pac-5 semifinals—and most importantly, knocked Servite out of the playoffs—Tesoro might be the second-best team in Orange County.

The Titans 55-14 nonleague victory Friday over visiting Compton certainly did nothing to dispel that notion.

It didn't do anything to enhance it, either.

Apart from giving up an early score that cut its lead to 14-8, Tesoro steamrolled Compton and built a 42-8 halftime lead over a program coming off a 3-7 season.

The Titans step up in competition next week with a home game against Newhall Hart.

As expected, quarterback Matt Adam and running back Nate Tago had big nights for Tesoro (1-0).

Adam passed for three touchdowns, including 23- and 84-yard scores to Forrest Dunivin. Tago took a pass 23 yards for another score, and also found the end zone on a run that accounted for two of his 99 yards. Adam was eight-for-eight passing for 188 yards.

The Tesoro defense surrendered only 156 yards, while the Titans amassed more than 400.
