Football: Mission Viejo Defeats Trabuco Hills Behind Bridgford, Defense

Diablos score a one-sided 42-7 victory to claim uncontested South Coast League title.

Unable to mount any consistent offensive performance, Trabuco Hills was defeated Thursday by South Coast League champion Mission Viejo, 42-7, at THHS.

Jonathan Newsom was sacked seven times by a relentless Mission Viejo defense, which didn't allow a touchdown with its first team on the field. That defense forced four turnovers, and also set up a touchdown with an 80-yard fumble return early in the game.

Alex Bridgford led the way for Mission Viejo (8-2, 4-0) with four touchdown passes, all to different receivers, and also rushed for one touchdown. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 178 yards with an interception.

Mission Viejo will continue in the Pac-5 playoffs next week. Trabuco Hills, by virtue of its fourth-place finish in the South Coast League and the division not having any at-large berths, is done for the season.
