New Girls' Volleyball Coach Offers 'Daly' Experience

Katy Daly, who developed teams in Laguna Beach, is named the girls' volleyball coach at Santa Margarita Catholic. She was an outstanding player at San Clemente High and Pepperdine.

Katy Daly, who has been a health and fitness teacher at Santa Margarita Catholic High for five years, has been named the school's new girls' volleyball coach.

Daly has been head coach for the past eight years with the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club, developing teams that were nationally recognized within volleyball circles. Before that, she was a head coach with Sports Shack Volleyball Club in Beverly Hills.

“I truly feel that coaching is my vocation,” Daly said. “I look forward to working with our student-athletes to help them reach their full potential as well-rounded student athletes.”

Daly was a team captain at Pepperdine University, where she was a scholarship player named All-Conference First Team three consecutive years. She prepped at San Clemente High, where she was the Southern Section player of the year in 2001 while helping her team win a section title.

In addition to playing at San Clemente, she competed with the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club and was MVP of the 1998 and 2002 national championship teams.

Daly earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts/physical education in 2006 and recently her master's degree in education, also from Pepperdine.

“The Santa Margarita volleyball program will provide an atmosphere for the student/athlete to excel in the classroom, have a positive high school experience, and an opportunity to win championships.” Daly said. “I look forward to running a competitive, faith-based program built on trust, discipline, consistency and fairness.”

In the school’s 25-year history, the girls’ volleyball program has captured seven Southern Section titles, nine league championships and a state title.

“I am confident Katy will continue to grow the outstanding volleyball program that has been established over the years at Santa Margarita,” said Rich Schaaf, the Eagles' athletic director. “She believes in what our athletic programs are all about, making our students not just better athletes, but better people on and off the court.”

Daly replaces Bryan Cottriel, who recently stepped down from his position as head coach of both the boys and girls volleyball teams.
