Santa Margarita Athletes Commit to Their College Futures

Three student-athletes sign national letters of intent while another makes his college commitment.

Three Santa Margarita Catholic High student-athletes signed letters of intent and another verbally committed to a college on Wednesday, the first day of the latest National Letter of Intent signing day for basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, women’s water polo, volleyball, golf, tennis and lacrosse. Earlier signing periods took place in November and February.

Shannon Mack signed to swim for Pacific, Lauren Hundley signed to play golf for Colorado Christian and Spencer Buckley signed to play volleyball at UC Santa Barbara, while Matthew MacDonald committed to play volleyball for New York University.

Mack, who resides in Mission Viejo, is a captain this year for the Eagles' swim team. She is an eight-time individual CIF qualifier whose times rank No. 2 in the 200 individual medley and No. 3 in the 100 butterfly in school history. An Academic All-American with a 3.7 grade-point average, Mack is also a member of the school's record-setting relay teams in the 4x100 IM, 4x50 fly and 4x100 freestyle. She is a member of St. Kilian's parish, where she serves as a youth group leader.

Coto de Caza's Hundley, a co-captain of the girls varsity golf team, has been named third-team All-Trinity League the past two years. She has helped the Eagles win three league titles and make two CIF Southern Section playoff appearances, including one second-place finish.

Buckley, also from Coto de Caza, has been a varsity volleyball player for three years and team captain since his junior season. He was a second-team All-Trinity League selection as a sophomore and was a first-team pick last year. Buckley was named MVP of the recent O.C. Championships, won by the Eagles. He is also a member of the Orange Coast Volleyball Club.

Buckley's teammate, MacDonald, also plays for the Orange Coast Volleyball Club. The Lake Forest resident has a cumulative 4.0 GPA and plans to study film and television at NYU.
