SMCHS Girls Water Polo Play for Title Today

Santa Margarita Catholic will compete at 2:30 in Irvine. Team was honored Friday at halftime of the basketball game.

The Santa Margarita Catholic girls' water polo team was honored at halftime of the boys' basketball game on Friday night.

Fitting, perhaps. The basketball team qualified for the championship game with its victory over Lawndale Leuzinger, and the water polo team is playing in the Southern Section Division 2 championship today (Saturday) at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine.

Santa Margarita, the second-seeded team in the division, will play Trinity League rival Mater Dei, the fourth-seeded team.

The programs faced each other earlier this season and Santa Margarita won, 12-11, in sudden death overtime.
