Soccer Playoffs: Roundup of Tuesday Games

San Clemente advances to the finals for the fifth consecutive season. St. Margaret's also wins.

Another year, another trip to the finals for San Clemente.

The Tritons girls' soccer team will be playing for a championship once again after scoring a 2-0 victory over Dana Hills on Tuesday in the Division 1 semifinals.

Hapsic's performance was enough to allow any goal to stand, and the Tritons added two of them for good measure. They got goals from Danielle Mellem, a junior, and Janae Cousteau, a senior.

Five consecutive trips to the finals is a county record, and the Tritons will see a familiar foe in the championship match—South Coast League rival Aliso Niguel—on Friday, 7:30, at Mission Viejo High.

San Clemente has not lost in its last 17 games, which includes five ties.

In three previous meetings this season between San Clemente and Aliso, each team won and there was a tie.

In its semifinal victory against the Eagles, San Clemente got the shutout by virtue of nine saves by Sheridan Hapsic.

The Tritons played from ahead against the Dolphins (16-6-1) as Natalie Higgins, a sophomore, made a nice pass to Mellem inside the box in the game's sixth minute. San Clemente's final goal came late in the contest, in the 77th minute.

Aliso Niguel 1 (4), Santa Margarita 1 (1): The Wolverines (19-1-4), who have lost semifinal games five times on penalty kicks, got one back by winning at home against Santa Margarita (16-6-2).

The Eagles were coming off an upset of top-seeded Corona del Mar, but that didn't help them after being tied in regulation and and through two overtime period. Santa Margarita tied the game in regulation when Kassidy Grossman scored in the 72nd of 90 minutes.

Aliso got a strong effort in goal from Sammy Jo Prud'homme, and Sarah Roberts delivered the decisive score in the shootout, her goal making it impossible for Santa Margarita to catch up in the best-of-five format.

In Division 6

St. Margaret's 1, San Dimas 0: The third-seeded Tartans advanced to this year's championship game by beating the team it lost to in last year's championship game. St. Margaret's (17-4-5) delivered another strong defensive performance, its 11th consecutive shutout en route to a 16th consecutive match without a loss.

McKenna Marmelstein headed in a corner kick from McCaully Patch late in the first half for the match's only score.

The Tartans will face top-seeded Hemet in the championship game Friday, 5 p.m., at Mission Viejo High.

San Dimas, seeded second in the division, finished 23-3-1.

IN BOYS' SOCCER

In Division 2

Capistrano Valley 2, Riverside La Sierra 1: The Cougars certainly know how to make it interesting. Trailing by a goal, they scored twice in the final minutes to steal a victory at La Sierra. Capistrano Valley (11-12-4), got timely goals from Kevin Baboiyan and Dylan Browning.

La Sierra (18-5-5) had reached the semifinals by upsetting top-seeded Claremont, 1-0—something the Eagles almost did with Capo Valley.

Capo Valley will play Moreno Valley Valley View, a 2-1 winner in overtime over Coachella Valley. The title game will be played Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Warren High in Downey.
