Sports Shorts: Tesoro, Santa Margarita Take on South L.A. Foes This Week

Titans' football team plays host to Narbonne on Thursday, and Eagles travel to Carson on Friday. Plus, Trabuco Hills takes on JSerra, Tesoro's Emily Scharmann dominates in cross-country, Titans beat Santa Margarita in girls tennis and advance to semifinal

As part of the South Los Angeles vs. South Orange County triumvirate of intersectional high school football games this week, Tesoro (2-1) plays host to Narbonne (1-1) from Harbor City at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

After suffering a seemingly the previous week, the Matt Adam and Nate Tago-led Titans bounced all the way back on Friday, easily handling Chino Hills, 27-3.

Narbonne, which is a contender for the City Section championship, almost pulled off a huge upset Friday, finally losing to Long Beach Poly, 19-16, only after junior quarterback Troy Williams’ two late throws into the end zone bounced off receivers’ hands. It was the second year in a row that the Gauchos came within three points of upsetting the Jackrabbits, .

Tesoro is averaging 23 points per game but has given up 21. Narbonne, which operates a no-huddle offense, is averaging 25 points and has surrendered 25.5. Williams threw for 256 yards and rushed for 87 in a 34-32 victory over Palos Verdes in the Gauchos' season-opener, but was limited to 109 yards passing and minus-five yards rushing by Poly.

SANTA MARGARITA TRAVELS TO CARSON

Find out what's happening in Rancho Santa Margaritawith free, real-time updates from Patch.

On Friday, Santa Margarita, , leaves the county for the first time this season, traveling to Carson (1-1) for a 7 p.m. intersectional game.

Looking for their first 4-0 start since 2006, the Eagles continue to get great rushing numbers from junior Ryan Wolpin, who ran for a season-high 227 yards and a school record-tying four touchdowns in on Thursday. Of course, running behind an offensive line led by Max Tuerk (6-6, 296), doesn’t hurt.

Santa Margarita had four interceptions in the first half against Trabuco Hills, giving the Eagles 10 takeaways in three games. The defense has allowed only 21 points and has 16 sacks in those three games.

Carson (1-1), which opened its season with a 26-22 victory over Mater Dei of the Trinity League, took last week off to lick its wounds after suffering a 38-18 thumping from Long Beach Poly on Sept. 9. The Colts are led by wide receiver Darreus Rogers (USC commit), who finished with 12 catches for 211 yards and two touchdowns against Poly.

Last season, Santa Margarita defeated Carson, 56-14, at Saddleback College.

Of special note is Eagles kicker John McGrory, who, after connecting on all four of his PATs last week, has made 76 consecutive PATs, only five shy of the Orange County record, which is held by Mitch Murar (Trabuco Hills, 2008-09). That’s also the Southern Section record, held by Murar and Steve Bayer of Claremont (1984-85).

McGrory is currently tied for 12th on the all-time national list, which is led by Kim Braswell of Avondale Estates (GA), who kicked 134 in a row from 1965-68. The California record, which is runner-up on the national list, is 115 held by Roman Ferreira of San Diego Cathedral (2007-08).

The third game of the South L.A. vs. South O.C. triumvirate? Mission Viejo hosts Long Beach Poly on Friday at 7 p.m.

In another Friday game:

JSerra (2-0) at Trabuco Hills (2-1), 7 p.m. -- The Lions of JSerra are off to another impressive start with a 28-21 victory over Long Beach Wilson and a 51-13 win over L.A. Wilson, but neither of those opponents is nearly as good as Trabuco Hills. I’m sure I don’t need to remind anybody about JSerra’s impressive start (and disastrous finish) in 2010, but a similar victory over the Mustangs -- the Lions beat Trabuco Hills, 40-17, last year -- would be very impressive. Trinity League rival Santa Margarita beat Trabuco Hills, 35-14, last week. Can the Lions, behind talented seniors quarterback Jake Hall and wide receiver Jonavaughn Williams, put up those same kinds of numbers against the Mustangs and their very impressive senior running back, Mitchell Simonsen? It's going to be tough.

SCHARMANN LEADS TESORO'S GIRLS IN CROSS-COUNTRY

Tesoro’s Emily Scharmann, who won the girls rated race at the Cross Country Classic Friday and Saturday at Estancia High, has been named the Orange County Register’s girls cross-country athlete of the week.

The junior led the Titans to the third-best team time, which was the fastest among all county schools entered in the 31st annual meet that was co-hosted by Woodbridge, Estancia, and Costa Mesa high schools and the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club, and was sponsored by Puma.

"I decided to go for it and it was a big goal of mine to go under 17 minutes," Scharmann told the Register. "We made it to state last year and it's our goal to get back there and do really well this season." She finished in 16 minutes, 58 seconds.
