Tijeras Creek Club Champion Is A Real Charger

Former El Toro player beats older competition, including the defending champion from Rancho Santa Margarita.

His name sounds like he comes from money, and over the weekend in Rancho Santa Margarita, Forbes Collins II played like money.

Played like a lot of it.

Collins shot even-par 72 on both days to win the championship flight of the Tijeras Creek Golf Club, winning the club championship by six strokes.

Collins, 21, is just a few years removed from playing for the Chargers of El Toro High. The Lake Forest resident just completed his junior season playing for Dominican University of California, a Division II school in San Rafael where he is studying International Trade and Development.

He beat runners-up Ola Stanqvist of Mission Viejo, and Ryan McLaughlin of Rancho Santa Margarita. Stanqvist and McLaughlin both shot 148 over 36 holes.

Stanqvist, by virtue of a lower score in the last nine holes, was awarded second place.

The defending champion, McLaughlin shot 73 and trailed Collins by a stroke through the first 18 holes.

Chris Taylor and Mark Sumida both carded 152 to complete the top five.

With his victory, Collins will receive entry into the Southern California Golf Association's Tournament of Club Champions in December.

Also winning entry into that tournament were winners in other categories, Bob Canty of Dana Point, who won the Net Flight with an adjusted score of 142 over two rounds, and Jim Fuchs of Santa Ana, who won the Senior Flight Gross with a 144, and Jim Dunn, who won the Senior Net title with a 138.
