Trabuco Canyon Eliminated From Junior All-Stars

Trabuco Canyon LL team won 11 of 13, but was beaten twice in a row by La Mirada for the Southern California championship.

After winning 11 of 13 tournament games, the Trabuco Canyon Junior All-Stars went into the Southern California Divisional Championship against La Mirada on a roll.

But in a role reversal, Trabuco Canyon was no match for District 29 champion La Mirada, which scored a 10-5 victory in Game 2 of the three-game series Saturday at Memorial Park in Santa Ana.

That was Trabuco Canyon's second loss in a row, and it eliminated them from the tournament.

If there was any solace for the losers, it was that Trabuco Canyon put up a tougher fight than it did in Friday's first game, a 9-1 loss in which it managed only two hits.

Six of La Mirada's runs were unearned as Trabuco Canyon committed six errors, and the local team's miscues didn't stop there, adding two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Unlike Game 1 in which it trailed from the outset, Trabuco Canyon took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jack Janett scored on Logan Welkowsky's single, and Justin Tropp scored on a wild pitch. Janett had three hits and later added an RBI single.

Robert Lan, who pitched a two-hitter for La Mirada in the first game, hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to give his team a 4-2 lead. It eventually stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fifth inning.

No Trabuco Canyon all-star team had ever advanced as far as the juniors, who missed a chance to reach the Western Regional next weekend in Vancouver, Wash. There, La Mirada will play the representative from Utah.
