Marine Car Wash Runs Out of Water

The city's adopted 2/5 Marines wash so many cars they run out of water. They raise about $3,000 to offset costs for the Marine Birthday Ball.

The 2nd Batallion 5th Marine Regiment from Camp Pendleton arrived with a few good men Sunday looking to wash cars. They did—right up until they ran out of water.

Apparently they tapped the resources of to the extent that they had to use garden hoses, and they finally called it a day. What they accomplished was signficant for the volunteer force of 47 who washed 129 cars in about six hours; the money will help reduce the cost of tickets to the annual Marine Birthday Ball on Nov. 10. That means an $80-$100 ticket—which might be a third of a Marine's weekly paycheck—will be cut in half or more.

The fundraising was by the Marine Birthday Ball Committee, which is mostly comprised of Marines who volunteered to wash cars on a Sunday in the city that has adopted the unit. It was not mandatory they participate.
