Briefing RSM Thru Oct. 20: Worthwhile Events This Week

A look at local activities and opportunities that could be of interest to Rancho Santa Margarita-area residents.

By Martin Henderson

A look at what's going down and coming up for Rancho Santa Margarita and residents of the surrounding area.

• Tuesday is the deadline for entrepreneurs who wish to pitch their ideas in front of a panel of judges for a chance to win $10,000. Cox Business and Inc. Magazine are teaming together on the project, called "Get Started O.C." Click here to register and click here for more details. Those who just want to watch and network can do so on Oct. 22, 5 p.m., at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin, located at 1302 Industrial Drive.

Saddleback Valley Toastmasters meet weekly on Tuesday mornings at Carrows in Laguna Hills. The restaurant is located on Carlota near Paseo de Valencia. The Laguna Hills Toastmasters have an open house Wednesday at Farmers & Merchants Bank.

• At the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Leon Russell performs Thursday and Eddie Money on Friday. Tickets to see Russell are $35, Money $40.

• League play in football began on Friday and, in the South Coast League (one of the best leagues in America), got off to a dramatic start with Tesoro's 37-34 victory over Trabuco Hills. With only two automatic playoff berths in the five-team league, the game Friday pitting El Toro at Tesoro has huge implications; even though only two games in, a win by Tesoro will almost assure the Titans of at least second place and a trip to the Pac-5 Division postseason. League favorite Mission Viejo, the top-ranked team in Orange County, had a bye last week and will kick off its pursuit of a league title at home against San Clemente. In the Trinity League, Santa Margarita Catholic, coming off its worst home loss in school history to national power St. John Bosco, needs a win against Servite at Cerritos College before tackling Mater Dei the following week.

• A free electronic waste and shredding event takes place Saturday in the parking lot of City Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Drop off unwanted computer monitors, laptops, cell phones, or other items. No household kitchen appliances or fluorescent tubes. For more information call Lawrence Jones at 714-372-8261 or email rbeimer@cityofrsm.org for more information. Limitations on shredding.

• Pre-registration is open through Oct. 16 for reduced $20 admission for a family history seminar conducted by the  South Orange County Genealogical Society. The event is at Mission Viejo City Hall. The theme is Settlers, Soldiers and Overcoming Brick Walls. The speaker is Lloyd Dewitt Bockstruck. For more details, click here. The event is Saturday.

• Registration is now open for a youth leadership summit in Irvine called Project Tomorrow. Click here for more details on the Saturday event.

• About 30 high schools are expected to be present and share their strengths to families of prospective students at the first Private High School Fair presented by the Orange County Private School Association. The event, at UC Irvine, is free on Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Click here for more details.

• For the racing inclined—and an Indy race team was once based in Rancho Santa Margarita—the IndyCar Series will crown a champion on Saturday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. Will Helio Castroneves, who has won three Indy 500s and one Dancing With The Stars title, win his first championship? Or will Scott Dixon win his third championship? Former South OC resident Ryan Hunter-Reay is the defending series champion.

• Looking ahead, there will be a blood drive at Melinda Heghts Elementary on Oct. 22 that will benefit the American Red Cross. The event is 2:30-7:30 p.m., in the school's multi-purpose room. Donors can sign up online for appointment times using "Melinda" as the sponsor code.
