UPDATE: Manhunt for Mission Viejo Robbers

Police say three men armed with pistols and a stun gun tied up a Mission Viejo couple, beat them and stole their valuables.

Police continued the search Friday for two men suspected of helping tie up, beat, shock and rob a young Mission Viejo couple inside their Promenade Apartments home. On Thursday Michael Vincent Ginger, 23, of Laguna Niguel, pled not guilty to 22 felonies related to the attack, which was the result of "a deal gone bad," Police Sgt. Sandra Kirsch said. Here's what happened according to police. Three men in their early 20s carrying pistols and a stun gun entered a couple's unlocked apartment around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Kirsch said. Police do not release the names of victims of violent crimes. Once inside the three men tied up the couple with electrical cord and shoe laces, shocked the boyfriend and hit him in the back of the head with the butt of a…

Eric Naposki and Nanette Ann Packard-McNeal were convicted in the 1994 murder of her former boyfriend, a Newport Beach millionaire. Victim's brother calls Packard-McNeal a "black widow" in court today while the prosecutor labels Naposki a coward.

An Orange County woman convicted of first-degree murder in the death of her millionaire boyfriend was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility parole today while her co-conspirator secret lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, had his sentencing delayed until Aug. 10. Nanette Ann Packard-McNeal, 46, received her punishment for the the Dec. 15, 1994, shooting of 55-year-old Bill McLaughlin this morning from Judge William Froeberg at the Orange County courthouse in Santa Ana. Authorities say Packard-McNeal was romantically involved with both McLaughlin and Naposki, 45, and the pair plotted to kill McLaughlin in order to reap the benefits of his savings account and $1-million life insurance policy. Naposki refused to appear in …

Water Wizards Ponder Future

Experts at OC Water Summit debate how to fix and expand the state's water infrastructure.

Water officials, experts and businesses converged Friday on the Grand Californian Hotel in Anaheim to learn what they can do to be more water-wise. The occasion was the Orange County Water District's 2012 Water Summit, and the topics ranged from water-stingy fabrics to global warming. "Essentially, we keep talking about the same things with water: where the problems are, how do we address them, how do we get people together?" said OCWD District 6 Director Cathy Green. "That's pretty much what the genesis of all of this is. What we're trying to do is -- all the people who are involved in water, business in particular -- to realize all the challenges they have, and see if we can get together and come up with a solution." The highlight of the…

How to See the Solar Eclipse on Sunday

Solar Eclipse 2012: 'Ring Of Fire' is coming to California. Best viewing time is 6:38 p.m.

Move over, Supermoon! California is in for another extraterrestrial evening display this weekend -- a rare "ring of fire" solar eclipse that hasn't been seen in the United States since 1994. Called an annular solar eclipse, the moon and sun will exactly align Sunday, May 20, creating a "ring of fire" around the moon because of the sun's larger apparent size. Unfortunately for Orange County, the best views of the "ring of fire" eclipse will be from Northern California around Eureka, Redding, the Sacramento suburbs, and Lake Tahoe, reports the Los Angeles Times. But that doesn't mean we still won't be in for an awe-inspiring view. The Griffith Observatory notes that the moon will eclipse 86 percent of the sun's diameter, which will be the …

Overtime Pay Skyrockets for Special Police Force in O.C.

The Office of Protective Services patrols five centers for the developmentally disabled, including Fairview in Orange County.

Overtime pay for a small, state-run police force has soared in recent years, according to a California Watch investigation. Last year, the Office of Protective Services paid roughly $2 million in overtime to 80 of its officers, who patrol five centers for the developmentally disabled, including Orange County's Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa. "An unusually high number of [OPS] officers ... have doubled their salaries with overtime, enabling some to earn more than $150,000 a year," California Watch reported, noting that the number of officers collecting overtime "far exceeds" other agencies. At Fairview, patrolman Daniel Butler "regularly collected more money from overtime than from his base pay" and "netted at least $60,000 a …

I love this place. I especially like their Prosciutto and Arugula pizza. I used to enjoy having their pizza along with one of their tasty wines outside on the patio. It was a nice to enjoy the good weather while eating a good pie and drinking a good glass of wine. However, this is not allowed anymore. :( I guess it's related to either RSMs rules about outdoor alcohol or the building owner. Not …   more ›

Green Fair: Turning Elephant Poop into Paper

The solar-powered Orange County Green Fair showcases luxury electric vehicles, whale-tail-shaped tortilla chips and other eco-friendly items.

Encased in a heart-shaped box, sheets of yellow paper with little green specks were displayed prominently at the buygreen.com booth. They originated from an elephant, or more precisely the animal’s excrement, before being repurposed into decorative gifts called Ellie Pooh Paper. “The Ellie Pooh paper is pretty unique,” said Nicole Roach of buygreen.com, which aims to become the Amazon.com of green products. “It is definitely a big seller.” Ellie Pooh Paper was one of hundreds of items -- from whale tail tortilla chips to a luxury electric car -- on display during Thursday’s Orange County Green Fair in Santa Ana. While larger companies like Home Depot, Whole Foods, Southern California Edison and Google helped sponsor the event, smaller …

Man Stabs Rival Over A Woman in RSM

Late-night altercation between two men, both 20, ends with one in jail and a Rancho Santa Margarita man in the hospital.

Rancho Santa Margarita may be one of America's safest cities, but that had little bearing on the welfare of a Rancho Santa Margarita man late Thursday night. A fight between two 20-year-old men over a woman ended with one stabbing and wounding the other, a sheriff's lieutenant said today. The fight happened around 11:20 p.m. Thursday in front of the victim's house in Rancho Santa Margarita in the 10 block of Montana Del Lago Drive, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Colin Murphy. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, while his rival, whose name was not released, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Murphy said. —City News Service

That's a good observation about people running at night with earphones—you're never really in a cocoon. RSM is fortunate news such as this is the exception rather than the rule.   more ›

Fiery Trabuco Crash Injures 3

One person is critical after rollover near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek.

A fiery rollover crash in Trabuco Canyon injured three people Thursday, an Orange County Fire Authority captain said. The single-vehicle crash was reported at 12:42 p.m. on the Holy Jim Trail about 2.5 miles from Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek, in a wilderness area popular for four-wheeling, said Capt. Marc Stone. The teens were in a pickup truck that rolled over into a ravine and caught fire, he said. Flames consumed the vehicle and burned some vegetation, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, Stone said. An OCFA helicopter was doing training exercises close by in Irvine at the time of the crash, and was able to get to the scene quickly, Stone said. The victims were about 18 years old, Stone said. A male, who was ejected …
