Penny- Thank you so much for bringing this to everyone's attention. I hand pick every charity I…Read More give to and make sure that the items I donate are not going to end up in a Tijuana swap meet or being sold for profit like the items that go into these bins. It just upsets me so much that the public is being fooled. I am a busy mom and I know that I have been tempted in the the past because I just want to clean out the garage or the kids closets and get rid of stuff. When people read the front of the bin at a glance and see The Childhood Disease Foundation they automatically think that they are contributing to curing children's diseases. There have been some investigative articles on this but I think you did a great job getting to the source which happens to be a for profit company in Canada! The sad thing is that every person along the way makes money on these donations. Makes me sick! I pass through millions of pieces every year to people who actually need them. And, for the skeptics no, I do not claim them as donations. The IRS guidelines say that you must own the items if you want to write them off as donations. I don't own them, I am just a helper who is a pass through. I hope that your article will bring more investigation into this scam and maybe the cities will actually have them removed. Thank you! Debbie

"The answer is not to each according to need, the answer is to each according to their…Read More effort."
Another classic confusion between effort and progress. Tell me, what effort do you, Mr. Webb need to put out in order to become a Congressman?
Take your time, and the answer of effort vs the need for money for your campaign becomes obvious.
I mean you lost because Campbell raised more money, right? Or did you lose because your ideology was a joke that fooled very few?

"When the economy starts growing at 7% there will be plenty of jobs."
Which is backwards.…Read More When we have more jobs, people will be working to contribute to the GDP and that's what will get the growth to 7%.
Saying that the economy has to grow at 7% to add jobs is like a company saying they have to double their revenues before they add people. It either means that the people they have are lazy, and by implication, Mr. Webb, that is what you are calling the American people.
Anyone wants to guess as to when this 7% figure which is put up as the bar was last met?
"Third, roll back the EPA to 1990 levels and then examine every new rule with an eye on ROI for the American Public."
Yes, because less cleaner air is what people need to work harder.

Nice job.
I'm in favor of educating youth and young adults about the consequences. Trauma,…Read More physical pain, emotional suffering and devastation, financial loss, anger and frustration that DUI victims and family members commonly experience.
Another powerful method is to invite young, convicted drunk drivers who have killed or injured victims to speak at schools.
Unfortunately many parents object to this because the stories are deemed too emotional.
But these are true stories and lessons that need to be shared with those who consider themselves invincible.
Besides with teenagers and young adults, it's real stories that persuade, not statistics or gimmicky commercials.
Websites like http://www.facesofdrunkdriving.com/ are very powerful.
But when you meet face to face with the young DUI driver in person, and absorb the consequences of their decisions, man it hits home.

Hi Leslie. Click on the Home tab (that would be the homepage) or the News tab (for all news and…Read More blogs) and then click on the headline "Residents Buzzed By MV Search That Nabs Four." That was it.
The Home tab gives you some of the more interesting stories but the News tab gives you ALL the news as it appears on the site in reverse chronological order.
Also, be sure to click on the Boards tab which is Announcements or Opinions that aren't attached to a particular story. The Events tab makes reading event a lot easier now, too.
If it looks like police activity in the area, you can snap a cell phone pic and post it directly onto Patch in the Boards; you can also email me directly because I don't see comments (such as this) as they occur. You'd still have to give me the tip.
I encourage everyone to click on the buttons and see what happens, and then post to the site.

First he hasn't been convicted.
Second we have no way of knowing if he or they were actually…Read More taking anything or not at the time.
3rd its a very small amount -- it was in his car. They still have to prove how it got there & that it was his
Lastly -- I'll reiterate this search cost more because searchers looked in the wrong area. The teens were exactly where they said they were. The fact it got so expensive is not all their fault no matter what. I still feel this is an attempt to divert attention from looking bad for that & preempting a lawsuit as they both almost died.
Oh yeah -- and publicity too ... Spritzer called a press conference on it from his home.
If they want to save money get rod of the rediculous waste in the county & judges who are taking bribes & trading sex for jobs. Yup -- that is under investigation now & that judge is still hearing cases

These kids don't have two cents to rub together anyway.
I'm imaging this cause and effect scenario:…Read More While getting "Saddleback Mountain High" on meth, they dropped their smoking pipe to the ground in search of more interesting things like happy butterflies to ride and delicious dry top soil to chew on.
Seconds later, a massive conflagration ignites and spreads to burn down Cook's Corner, local homes, campings sites and stables.
Good thing that didn't happen, but just imagine the outrage and calls for reimbursement...

Got to give Gov. Brown credit for recognizing that the surplus is a "one off" situation.…Read More I wouldn't be surprised if the planned budget will be smaller in FYI 14-15 than it is 13-14. The analysts that answered questions about why next year is anticipated to be lower were hilarious. Japan, workers working less hours, China, North Korea (seriously). It will be lower next year because companies and people were taking profits, accelerating dividend and cap gains and delaying deductions to avoid the 2013 FEDERAL tax increase. With his hands tied with Props 98/111 and needing to spend those funds on ED, CC does make some sense. I can't speak to the strategy and timing of how the the money is being spent. I would have preferred that districts been allowed to retire as much debt as possible to reduce cash flow to debt servicing, and increasing the amount of cash flow that could be spent on ED.

As for attacking teachers, please read your posts on just this one thread. Here's just one direct quote:
"I don't see anything so radical in it that would require our already (presumed) expert teachers to need a billion dollars worth of training."
As has been pointed out the billion dollars is targeted for EVERY part of implementation, not just teacher training. You really have trouble seeing past your dislike for teachers to see what this article is really saying. This is often the case.

fact checker, as you are certainly aware, CTA must approve any curriculum that is implemented in the…Read More state of California. That being said, there is no requirement that this be done using categorical funds. This was done to direct money as CTA desired. It offers no benefit students in CUSD.
LaAna, please be accurate. I don't attack teachers.

Well, the loans are there, they just aren't liar loans anymore. There's been a shift back to…Read More collateral-based lending and fundamental lending standards, e.g. the notion of a down payment requierement ("skin in the game") and "ability to pay rule" for borrowers. OMG What a novel concept! It's like Banking 101 for these jokers. I welcome it because I'm tired of using tax dollar to bail out HELOC abusers.
Realtors need to make commission-paying hay while the sun shines though in 2013. Prices are high now because of low supply. Fannie and Freddie are introducing new QRM rules (qualified residential mortage) in 2014.
Also coming our way in 2014:
1. Putting sacred cow on a diet - future reductions in Mortgage Interest Tax Deduction? $70 billion/yr. federal subsidy.
2. New Fed Chairman (Bernanke likely heading out the door).

The high home prices are in regional bubbles. Houses in Rossmoor are way up from 6-9 mouths ago.…Read More Average listing price now is 830,000 and 8 months ago it was 670,000. However, my friend's neighborhood home prices in Costa Mesa are dead flat and have gone up very little. A quick check of Zillow will show the real hot spots.
And it is still a buyers market since the economy is supposed to go weak in a few months killing sales and price growth. And not many homes are selling for over a million anymore. Everyone wants old stock homes they can knockdown. And everyone is using cash only, which means ONLY the rich are buying now. So it really does not matter about supply if you can't get a loan. Right Friedrich.
