This was our third year.
I especially like being involved in the folding of the flags to be…Read More retired. My daughter & I have always been the only ones from her troop to attend.
Last year there were more Girl Scouts. I really wish the word was put out there more for them as well as the Boys.

I was a volunteer at ranchofest and it was a fantastic time overall, but I was really shocked and…Read More saddened during the national anthem when just one of the marines decided to sit in the humvee and not get out and salute like every other member of the group that was here, even standing atop the vehicles. It was disgraceful and I wasn't the only one that saw it.

Like you I enjoyed Rancho Fest immensely. Volunteered in our Foothills Church booth and met so many…Read More nice folks, just enjoyed the feeling of community! Can't wait for next year.
It was great to have the presence of military, particularly for the kids. I am glad I did not see that marine - I used a lower case m purposely - or we would have had a little discussion about respecting my flag and my country. If he is going to "serve" then his entire heart and soul better be in it! Sure doesn't fit the mold of a U.S. Marine does it? My 80 year old brother-in-law, once a Marine always a Marine always removes his cap/hat, places his right hand over his heart and cries when he sees Old Glory being honored. He is a Marine through-and-through right down to the polished, buffed shoes until they are like mirrors. That to me is a Marine and we could sure use a few more like him and others of the Greatest Generation. Semper fi' all of you Marines who make me so proud to be an American.

All valid comments by Ken. In reading the article it obvious that the event is fundraiser for the…Read More RSM Chamber of Commerce, which is essentially a networking group. And while it's possible that chamber members are receiving a free space, dollars to donuts that *all* vendors are most likely paying hundreds of dollars for their booths, 'no one rides for free'. It's a fundraiser.
Fundraisers that succeed do so because either they give value to attendees, or people don't expect or receive value but look at their contribution as a donation or sorts, an opportunity to financially support an organization in a way other than just handing over cash. This type of event will have to give value, and if it doesn't people will catch on and not attend in the future.
Ken Goldenberg June 8, 2013 at 09:14 pm
Maybe it is a fundraiser, however that is not indicated on the event poster. But again, and like you…Read More suggested, what value is it to the attendees? I am the consumer, it is not up to me to be raising money for the Chamber, it is up to the businesses that belong to it and depend on local patronage.
As I suggested, they should have at least given out 5 meal tickets per admission, or perhaps an RSM business discount card that you could use to get 10% off at local businesses over the summer..... Something! I am not going to pay $10 so I can walk through a field of people trying to sell me something, and on top of that pay more money for tickets so I can get small samples of food (RSM...the Meca of chain-fast food restaurants!).
Hey, we leased two cars from RSM Honda - great deals on both. But unless they pay me a fee to advertise for them, I'm not keeping their license plate frame on my car. Get my point?

Ah shucks, folks! Yesterday I worked in our Foothills Community Church booth, met new neighbors and…Read More saw old friends. Loved the kids' having such a grand time. Having grown up in small town Placentia in the '40s and '50s it brought back many memories! How reassuring to have the military on site with their equipment, answering questions of the kids', local police officers and OC sheriff's, etc. This is my town and I embrace it; might not agree with everything but tell me someplace you could live and not disagree occasionally. It was a joyous day. God blessed us with sunshine, a lovely breeze, and laughter! Lighten up and enjoy what Rancho Fest and the intention! Have a terrific Sunday all my RSM neighbors. See you 'round the lake!

I hope that the city does a better job of reviewing the work after it is done. For example, the turn…Read More lanes at Empresa and RSM Parkway. They were poorly done by American Asphalt; bumpy and uneven. American Asphalt also did an upgrade on some roads in Mission Viejo that were bumpy and uneven.
I don't know what company is doing the slurry work but ours was done O.K. But, it's pretty easy to do withou messing it up.

Thank you Martin for your words. I do not follow twitter and have found the words posted here from…Read More Pastor Rick to be one of the most heartwrenching, deep, and inspiring things I have read in ages! Pastor Rick is an amazing human being and truly a leader. I am certain that his son's death will not be in vain, as Pastor Rick will make certain of that (he is already in the process of creating a minisry for mental illness and the world could use this). I am grateful to "The Patch" for posting these tweets, something I would never have read otherwise. THANK YOU!!!

I can't keep up with Twitter (it's hard enough with Facebook and Instagram), so I appreciate you posting this.

Chris and Mike, this is what Jason Park told me based on my notes and trying to keep up with him:…Read More "They were located off Trabuco Creek Road. The car was located in a turnout about 2.75 miles off Trabuco Canyon road. To the south of where the vehicle was is where we located Kyndall and Nicholas was located in the area. They were about .8 miles from the vehicle, about 500 feet south of Trabuco Creek Road."

Martin, you are correct that there were numerous people "there" but not really…Read More contributing in a meaningful way to the search. Most of them were well intentioned young people. They were the ones with Vans, tank tops, shorts, and one little water bottle.
The GPS coordinates were posted in the FaceBook groups but I don't have them handy. The two kids were very close to each other up the side of a very steep hillside. As far as I know there are no trails leading into that area because it's just a steep hillside. The only reason I can think they were in that area is that they were trying to reach higher ground.
Hopefully the sheriff investigation will shed some light into the whys and the hows. I am scratching my head on many aspects of the case.
