Kevin Rudolph, William Johnson Jr. and Joseph Stewart lost their lives during the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. A fourth sailor -- believed to be Theo Mavromatis -- remains unaccounted for.
Blunt-force trauma and drowning killed three of the sailors who perished last weekend in the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race, according to a San Diego County Coroner's report released this afternoon. Kevin Eric Rudolph, 53, of Manhattan Beach, William Reed Johnson Jr., 57, of Torrance, and Joseph Lester Stewart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla., lost their lives in the mysterious Aegean yacht crash. Rudolph died from blunt-force injuries to his head and neck, Johnson from multiple blunt-force injuries and Stewart drowned, the coroner said. A child actor before becoming a member of the Beatles-inspired TV band, Jones was 66. He apparently died of a heart attack.
Davy Jones, who played a tambourine and unquestionably filled the role of "the cute one" on the Monkees television show, has died in Florida of an apparent heart attack. He was 66. Jones teamed with Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith to form one of the most popular groups of the late 1960s and forever become a staple on television reruns. All but Nesmith continued to tour together periodically for reunion tours, and Jones would also appear on solo gigs. According to the website TMZ, Jones was at a ranch visiting his horses, but began experience distress while sitting in a car, where he told a ranch hand he was having trouble breathing. The popular band instructor at Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate will have his life celebrated at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center.
Donn Jones, who brought music to the lives of thousands who passed through his classeroom at Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate, will be remembered Saturday in a "Celebration of Life" program at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Jones died Jan. 31 after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 58. Attendees are asked to dress comfortably, with Hawaiian shirts or RSM band shirts the preferred fashion statement. Musical performances are expected by Jones' former students, the Mission Viejo High Jazz Band, and the RSM Intermediate teacher band Sweet Cream. in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the RSM Intermediate Music Booster Club on behalf of Donn Jones. Donn Jones, who taught thousands of students in Rancho Santa Margarita, died Tuesday. He was recalled as a beloved and respected teacher, humanitarian and friend.
He was a beloved teacher who taught thousands of students and breathed music into the community, but the song that was Donn Jones' life struck its final chord on Tuesday. The Rancho Santa Margarita Intermediate music teacher was at home, surrounded by his wife Gillian and family, when he died quietly in his sleep from a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 58. The Joneses live in Lake Forest. He has two children from a previous marriage, Andrew and Courtney, who were at his side. News of his death was shared with colleagues after school on Tuesday, and eighth-grade students were notified first-thing Wednesday morning. Rancho Santa Margarita man was selected the first king in the annual Relay For Life event. He died last week after a long battle with triple negative breast cancer.
One of the more visible organizations in Rancho Santa Margarita is Relay For Life, which helps raise money for the American Cancer Society. A few years ago, the local event began a tradition of selecting a king and queen to represent it at various community events, the selectee being someone who is regarded as a cancer survivor. Brian Wayne Caradonna was his city’s first king in 2008, but Caradonna turned out to be “cancer-free” for only a very short time. He died last week of a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. He was 49. “I was very lucky to have him as my husband,” said his wife, Michele. “He took care of us and was a man of integrity that was over the top. Family and friends spoke about the life of Jessica Joy Rees, who died this month from cancer, at a service that drew thousands to Lake Forest.
Family and friends of Jessica Joy Rees made the Wednesday evening celebration of her life one the 12-year-old herself would have enjoyed. Thousands attended the Saddleback Church service in memory of the young swimmer, a member of the Mission Viejo Nadadores better known as "Jessie," who died Jan. 5 after a 10-month battle with cancer. The service included Jessica's favorite Bible passages, favorite Christian songs—the ones that she listened to during cancer treatments—and, at its end, favorite treats—candy, cupcakes and cookies. Jessica Joy "Jessie" Rees fought two brain tumors. The 12-year-old inspired a foundation to encourage children like her facing deadly diseases.
Twelve-year-old Jessica Joy Rees has died after a 10-month struggle with two brain tumors. Rees, a Rancho Santa Margarita resident, swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and her father is a pastor at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest. After an MRI revealed an inoperable brain tumor March 3, 2011, "Jessie" Rees began encouraging other kids with cancer. She inspired a foundation called NEGU—"Never Ever Give Up." On her Facebook page, Jessie explained her philosophy. "My mission is to encourage kids fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up by spreading hope, joy and love," she wrote. Few men have tried to succeed a legend the way Gene Bartow did. He was the man who had the unfortunate task of following in the footsteps of legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. Bartow died Tuesday after battling stomach cancer for almost two years. He was 81. Bartow not only followed Wooden at UCLA, where he was unable to match the Wizard of Westwood's success, but he went on to become the architect of a new athletics program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jim Nielsen, who taught on campus 17 years, succumbs after a brief illness.
James Nielsen, who taught religion at Santa Margarita Catholic High, died Tuesday evening after a short illness. He was 57. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Nielsen was in his 17th year of teaching on campus and had taught all grade levels. He was currently teaching a Religion 1 course, the Bible, to freshmen. With a Bible as his constant companion, Nielsen was regarded as a prayerful and thoughtful man whose almost ever-present smile left a positive impression. Nielsen, who was diabetic, seemed healthy at a staff luncheon Dec. 16. But within about two days, he reportedly contracted a cold that quickly developed into pneumonia and an infection.
