UPDATE: Manhunt for Mission Viejo Robbers

Police say three men armed with pistols and a stun gun tied up a Mission Viejo couple, beat them and stole their valuables.

Police continued the search Friday for two men suspected of helping tie up, beat, shock and rob a young Mission Viejo couple inside their Promenade Apartments home. On Thursday Michael Vincent Ginger, 23, of Laguna Niguel, pled not guilty to 22 felonies related to the attack, which was the result of "a deal gone bad," Police Sgt. Sandra Kirsch said. Here's what happened according to police. Three men in their early 20s carrying pistols and a stun gun entered a couple's unlocked apartment around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Kirsch said. Police do not release the names of victims of violent crimes. An Orange County woman convicted of first-degree murder in the death of her millionaire boyfriend was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility parole today while her co-conspirator secret lover, former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki, had his sentencing delayed until Aug. 10. Overtime Pay Skyrockets for Special Police Force in O.C.

The Office of Protective Services patrols five centers for the developmentally disabled, including Fairview in Orange County.

Overtime pay for a small, state-run police force has soared in recent years, according to a California Watch investigation. Last year, the Office of Protective Services paid roughly $2 million in overtime to 80 of its officers, who patrol five centers for the developmentally disabled, including Orange County's Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa. "An unusually high number of [OPS] officers ... have doubled their salaries with overtime, enabling some to earn more than $150,000 a year," California Watch reported, noting that the number of officers collecting overtime "far exceeds" other agencies. At Fairview, patrolman Daniel Butler "regularly collected more money from overtime than from his base pay" and "netted at least $60,000 a …

Man Stabs Rival Over A Woman in RSM

Late-night altercation between two men, both 20, ends with one in jail and a Rancho Santa Margarita man in the hospital.

Rancho Santa Margarita may be one of America's safest cities, but that had little bearing on the welfare of a Rancho Santa Margarita man late Thursday night. A fight between two 20-year-old men over a woman ended with one stabbing and wounding the other, a sheriff's lieutenant said today. The fight happened around 11:20 p.m. Thursday in front of the victim's house in Rancho Santa Margarita in the 10 block of Montana Del Lago Drive, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Colin Murphy. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, while his rival, whose name was not released, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Murphy said. —City News Service

That's a good observation about people running at night with earphones—you're never really in a cocoon. RSM is fortunate news such as this is the exception rather than the rule.   more ›

Fiery Trabuco Crash Injures 3

One person is critical after rollover near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek.

A fiery rollover crash in Trabuco Canyon injured three people Thursday, an Orange County Fire Authority captain said. The single-vehicle crash was reported at 12:42 p.m. on the Holy Jim Trail about 2.5 miles from Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek, in a wilderness area popular for four-wheeling, said Capt. Marc Stone. The teens were in a pickup truck that rolled over into a ravine and caught fire, he said. Flames consumed the vehicle and burned some vegetation, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, Stone said. An OCFA helicopter was doing training exercises close by in Irvine at the time of the crash, and was able to get to the scene quickly, Stone said. The victims were about 18 years old, Stone said. A male, who was ejected …

Family of Marine Killed by Deputy Sues Orange County

Sgt. Manuel Loggins' widow and children say the sheriff's deputy was negligent when he opened fire.

The family of Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins has sued Orange County, a move that was widely expected after a sheriff's deputy shot and killed Loggins in February in front of his two young daughters. Brian T. Dunn of the Cochran Firm in Los Angeles had already filed a claim with the Orange County Sheriff's Department on behalf of the family, a precursor to litigation. The family alleges that Loggins was lawfully sitting in his car and making no threatening movements when Deputy Darren Sandberg opened fire Feb. 7. Earlier that moring, Loggins drove through a gate in the parking lot of San Clemente High School. According to the police narrative, he left the car and headed into the dark athletic fields making "irrational statements." The daughters…

Women Head Out on Same Trip that Claimed Horse's Life Last Week

For safety, they'll avoid the switchback trails where four horses fell into a Trabuco Canyon ravine.

UPDATE: New information about the horse's carcass left behind added at 2 p.m. Thirty-two women and their horses gathered Thursday morning in San Juan Capistrano, ready to embark on a four-day journey similar to the one that ended so badly for their husbands and friends the week before. “Blessings to all creatures great and small,” Pam Ogilvie prayed before the group started a 62-mile trek to Norco. “A special prayer for the men who experienced so much.” The women, mostly from Norco and Corona, have been riding together for years, making multi-day trips throughout Southern California. But tragedy struck Friday, when four horses and their riders slipped off a trail and fell into a steep ravine in the Cleveland National Forest in Trabuco …

Two Fullerton police officers were ordered today to stand trial for the beating death of schizophrenic transient Kelly Thomas. Officer Manuel Anthony Ramos, 38, is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, while Cpl Jay Cicinelli, 40, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and excessive force in the beating last July 5 at the Fullerton Transportation Center. As a Advocate I feel all the Police Officers involved in the situation are just as equally responsible for his death. for one the officers present could have prevented such brute force the fact is man was unarmed no such force should have been used. there are non lethal methods so their claim is hog wash this truly makes it harder for those who truly serve and protect in all communities   more ›
