The middle school -- home of the Bears -- is part of the Capistrano Valley Unified School District and is dedicated to promoting high achievement and well-being. It has previously been named a California Distinguished School.
The school, which has 57 classrooms, has a strong Performance Art program, and its physical fitness options include classes in aerobics and yoga, in addition to a fitness center. The school has participated in Students Run Los Angeles and had 14 students complete the Los Angeles Marathon.

Students scored 82 percent proficiency in English/language arts, 75 percent in math (excluding algebra), 51 percent in algebra, 79 percent in history/social science, and 89 percent in science. With the exception of algebra, the school performed at least 27 points higher than the state average for middle schools. The state average in algebra was 47 percent.
