Baseball: Most Local Teams Must Play Their Way Into Round 1

Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.

They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

Golf: Hossler Leads SMCHS to Section Championship

Beau Hossler fires a 6-under 65 as Santa Margarita holds off Long Beach Wilson to win the Southern Section team championship.

It helps to have a built-in advantage, and any time Beau Hossler steps on the golf course these days, he's an advantage for Santa Margarita Catholic. Hossler shot a 6-under 65 at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course and led the Eagles to a five-stroke victory over Long Beach Wilson in the Southern Section Team Championship Hossler seems to be on a tear. The third-ranked junior golfer in the country, he won the Trinity League title with a 4-under 31 at Willowick Golf Course to win the Trinity League title. On Thursday, Hossler had seven birdies and won medalist honors by five strokes as the Eagles became the fourth consecutive Trinity League team to win the title. Servite had won the last three titles. Other county teams in the tournament included…

Baseball: El Toro Beats Tesoro for South Coast Title

Chasen Ford mows down Tesoro for the second time this season and Mitch Tolman continues to have a big week as El Toro wins the South Coast League title.

If you can't score, you can't win. And against El Toro's pitching staff, Tesoro can't score. And so, with first place on the line Thursday at Tesoro, the Titans couldn't win. For the third time this season, an El Toro pitcher—this time junior Chasen Ford—fired a shutout, beating the Titans, 4-0, to put the final touches on a South Coast League title. The teams came into the week sharing first place, with home and away games against each other. But the Chargers—ranked No. 7 in the Southern Section Division 1 poll—scored a 9-0 victory on Tuesday before following with another shutout on the regular season's final day. El Toro finishes the regular season 24-6 overall, 9-3 in league; Tesoro is 18-10-1, 7-5. Mitchell Tolman, whose first homer of…

Baseball: El Toro 9, Tesoro 0

Mitchell Tolman's first homer—a grand slam—aids junior pitcher Stephen Villines as the Chargers shut out Tesoro for the second time this season.

Advantage, El Toro. The South Coast League baseball title will play out this week, and El Toro guaranteed itself a piece of the championship with a 9-0 victory Tuesday over Tesoro, the team it was tied with before the game. The regular season concludes on Thursday at Tesoro with the Titans playing host to the Chargers, who have won both league meetings by shutout. Because of that, El Toro (23-6, 8-3) has guaranteed that it will enter the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs next week as the first-place entry from the league, even if it loses to Tesoro (18-9-1, 8-4) in the South Coast finale. That means El Toro, ranked No. 7 in the division, is guaranteed a first-round home game; Tesoro could end up playing another second-place team on the …

Lacrosse: Corona del Mar Ends Foothill's 5-Year Reign

San Clemente also reaches boys' final, while Los Alamitos and CdM will play for the girls' title.

When U.S. Lacrosse Division 1 South crowns a champion on Wednesday at Dana Hills High, the ceremony will have a decidedly different look than it has the past five years. There will be no Foothill. That's because Corona del Mar continued its historic unbeaten season by defeating the five-time defending champion, 7-5, during semifinal play on Saturday. Casey Mix and Michael Keasey had three goals apiece for CdM (22-0), and goalie Michael Ortleib had 13 saves as the Sea Kings turned back the Knights. When the boys' final commences at 7 p.m., Corona del Mar (22-0) will face off against San Clemente (15-6). It will be a big night for CdM, which will also play for the girls' title beginning at 5 p.m. The Tritons were in a battle, but emerged …

Swimming: Capo Valley, Tesoro Sweep League Finals, SMCHS Almost Does

Mater Dei's 10-point victory in the boys' competition denies Santa Margarita Catholic a Trinity League title, though the girls win. Tesoro and Trabuco Hills finish 1-2 in the Sea View.

League finals for boys' and girls' swimming in South Orange County took place Friday, and in two of three cases the championships were swept by the same school. It almost happened in the third league, the Trinity League, but Mater Dei held off Santa Margarita Catholic, 532-522, to prevent a SMCHS sweep at the Santa Margarita aquatic center. Tesoro and Trabuco Hills finished 1-2 in the Sea View League Championships at El Toro High. In its home pool, Capistrano Valley was the easy winner in the South Coast League in both boys' and girls' competition. The Southern Section released its seeding sheets for the section meet that runs May 8-12. Local girls who are seeded No. 1 are: freshman Katie McLaughlin of JSerra in the 100 freestyle and 100 …

Santa Margarita Athletes Commit to Colleges

Football players are among those who sign letters of intent.

Sixteen athletes from Santa Margarita Catholic High signed letters of intent last week, and another has tweeted that he's all-in on his decision to play football in the Pacific Northwest. It was a good day for football players who helped the Eagles win the Southern Section Pac-5 and Division I State Bowl championships. Dane Crane (6-3, 305), the No. 3 rated center in the nation, used Twitter to announce that he had committed to play at Washington. He reportedly chose the Huskies over Florida State, Colorado, California, Arizona and San Diego State. Hometown Hockey Heroes Honored By City Leaders

Rancho Santa Margarita's city council recognizes Santa Margarita Catholic's ice hockey club, which won the state championship this year. Murder victim Elvis Kechechian, the team's trainer, is remembered.

For the second time in 2012, the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council had a state championship winning sports team in its council chambers. Back in January, it was a football team. On Wednesday night, the council honored the Santa Margarita Catholic High ice hockey club for winning this year's state championship. “You’ve made the city very proud,” Mayor Tony Beall said to the gathered students, family and coaches at the beginning of the meeting. “The Eagle players and coaching staff are great representatives of the city of Rancho Santa Margarita.” After players and coaches gathered in front of the dais, Beall read a proclamation recognizing the team for its efforts. In addition to being local league champions for the third consecutive year…
