Diablos dominate on offense and defense in their South Coast League opener.

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 1 in Orange County and No. 2 in the Southern Section Pac-5 Division, scored in the first 40 seconds and never looked back in a dominating South Coast League victory over visiting San Clemente on Friday.

Score: Mission Viejo 70, San Clemente 17

Key Stats: Ian Fieber passed for 300 yards and three touchdowns, of 50 yards to Sean Modster, 53 yards to Connor Hill, and 9 yards to Andrew Schuurs.

Pivotal Moment: In the opening minute, Jake White returned an interception for a 27-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead for Mission Viejo. It was a longshot that San Clemente might win, but the Tritons could ill afford to give up a defensive touchdown and have a chance.

In addition to White’s early return, Nick Wilks returned an interception 25 yards early in the third quarter, and Austin Neville returned a fumble 1 yard in the fourth. … First place in league will be on the line next week when Mission Viejo plays host to Tesoro. … Alex Suchesk rushed for 92 yards, including an 80-yard score to open the second half to give Mission a 42-17 lead. … San Clemente scored 17 points in the first half, on Blake Gonzalez’s 27-yard field goal in the first quarter, and two Loren Applegate to Jake Russell TD passes of 68 and 5 yards. … Next week San Clemente has a bye.
